Klitschko announced the beginning of the defense of Kyiv

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported on the tense situation in the Ukrainian capital. According to him, the city "entered the phase of defense," TASS reports.

He urged residents of the Obolonsky district of the city to stay at home or in shelters and leave only after the end of the air raid signal. The mayor advised citizens to stock up on water, food and essentials.

Earlier, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Major General Igor Konashenkov, said that the Russian army would not strike at residential buildings in Kyiv.

A day earlier, an air raid alert was announced in Kyiv and a curfew was introduced. Klitschko warned that it was forbidden to move around the city at night and leave the capital without restrictions.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that he had decided to conduct a military special operation to protect the Donbass in response to a request for help from the heads of the LPR and DPR.

The Ukrainian authorities have introduced martial law in the country. Local residents began to leave the capital.
