Governor of Gibraltar resigns over “British failure to stand up to Spain”

The governor of Gibraltar Sir James Dutton has announced his resignation on Monday after less than two years in the role, after reportedly growing frustrated at the Foreign Office’s failure to stand up to Spanish aggression.

His decision to step down is unprecedented in the modern history of Gibraltar.

A highly-decorated Lieutenant General who spent 37 years in the Marines, the 61-year-old was said to feel that he had been “sold a duff” by the Foreign Office, and become increasingly irritated at the toothless British response. Instead of playing an active role in defending Gibraltarian interests in the face of Spanish sabre-rattling, he discovered that his role was simply to liaise between the Foreign Office and the government of Gibraltar.
