War as sacrifice

PICTURE: DOMENICO FETTI (ROME C. 1588-VENICE 1623) The Sacrifice of Elijah Before the Priests of Baal c.1621-22

The priests carefully watched the sky. They were waiting. After a two-month absence, the Heavenly Serpent appeared. So the Indians called Venus. They knew that now the gods demanded blood. The war began. Its main goal has always been sacrifice ... When Hitler said that the main goal of politics is war, it seems that he meant the same thing.

Only the Aztecs annually brought up to thirty thousand victims ... A special place in such cults was occupied by the slaughter of their own children. This was not only the case in South America. Ritual homicide was practiced in Carthage and other countries of the ancient Semitic world...

The prophet David testifies about the people who had fallen away from God: “... and they offered their sons and their daughters as a sacrifice to demons; they shed innocent blood, the blood of their sons and their daughters, whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan; the earth was defiled with blood” (Ps. 35, 38).

During one of the grandiose Nazi events, from the bodies of children sitting in the stands, they made an appeal to the Fuhrer: we all belong to you ... So the younger generation of the Third Reich was inspired that it should be true to the Fuhrer - to death.

For the time being, no one realized the terrible, literal meaning of these words. After all, only health and strength were spoken aloud.

With the coming of the Nazis to power, appropriations for medicine increased tenfold. The pathos of life seemed to be reflected even in the structure of the Gestapo: a department was created in the secret police to combat homosexuality and abortion.

Nazi propaganda assured that due to the efforts of doctors in Germany, a million more children were born. Himmler's decree, dated October 1939, urged SS men to have children before going to war. At the same time, each member of the order had to deduct part of the salary for the maintenance of maternity hospitals. A special burden fell on bachelors.

German experts have determined that after the war 3-4 million women will remain unmarried. Hitler noted that if counted in divisions, then "our people simply cannot bear" such a loss. In Bormann's memorandum, with clerical accuracy, the procedure for petitions and registration of marriage relations was developed not only with one, but also with the second wife. In order to somehow console the first, as a rule, “old” wife, Himmler proposed introducing the title “Domina” for her.

The recipients of military awards looked at their Golden German, Knight, Iron Crosses, at the signs "For hand-to-hand combat in silver and gold" and already imagined their future happy life next to young, blond, submissive girlfriends. They remembered the words of the Fuhrer, who promised the heroes all the advantages over civilians: "The best warrior gets the most beautiful woman."

The demographic and social policy of the Third Reich blossomed with smiles and sounded like children's voices in propaganda films. But she only seemed to love life - like the biography of Goethe. Her task was the most productive raising of cattle for sacrifices. Calling the massacre "the altar of the fatherland", they drove both their own and others to death.

Already familiar to us, Jörg Lanz von Liebenfels wrote about the need for genetic selection, sterilization, deportation of the inferior, and even the destruction of entire groups through overwork or direct murder. “Sacrifice Freyr, you children of the gods!” Liebenfels exclaimed. “Lay the children of darkness on the altar!”

When, in October 1941, Hitler was informed of the heavy losses among young officers on the Eastern Front, he calmly replied: “But that’s what young people are needed for!”

The brilliance of the mourning rallies, as it were, "created an advertisement for death." “With this same aesthetic reverence for death, the love of the night is also connected. Torches, bonfires, fiery wheels were burning all the time, which, according to the totalitarian masters of creating the right mood, supposedly sang of life. In fact, with their pathos, they emphasized that human life is of little value against the background of apocalyptic images, awe before the global fire, to which they attached some sublime meaning, and pictures of death, including their own.

Indeed, although death sometimes quite convincingly pretended to be life, it remained true to itself.

The implicit understanding of war as a sacrifice comes through already in Mein Kampf. This is how its author “paid off” the demon: “The land on which the German peasant generations have long given birth to their mighty sons will approve the introduction of current sons into battle, and responsible statesmen, although they are currently being persecuted, will in the future be acquitted of guilt in the murder and the sacrifice of the people.

It seemed that some mysterious forces, to which sacrifices were made, accepted them favorably. And they helped. Of a ten-year era of amazing success, jubilation and mass euphoria, Hitler himself said that he was "not just a human creation." That's for sure.

But could anyone else in the 21th century think like the Aztec priests? Like in the days of Carthage? Now the war seems to have completely different motives. The leader can think about his place in history, the capitalist - about profits, the general - about the duty to the Motherland, the soldier - about protecting the family. And the fact that war is a sacrifice ...
