Deputy in hijab Maryam took the oath

In the US state of Connecticut, for the first time in history, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab became a deputy of the legislature.

Maryam Khan officially became a member of the House of Representatives of the Connecticut legislature, according to bbabo.net citing Yahoo! News.

“I am honored to represent our community and I am committed to working in Hartford. Our community and state are facing unprecedented challenges, but a bright future is on the horizon,” Khan said.

The 33-year-old Muslim woman won the snap election in her constituency, leaving rivals Charles Jackson and Lawrence Jaggon far behind.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Matt Ritter welcomed Maryam Khan to the ranks of deputies and expressed hope for fruitful cooperation.
