German Defense Ministry: Russia has no right to control the composition of NATO

The head of the German Defense Ministry, Christine Lambrecht, said that the Russian Federation has no right to indicate which countries NATO should consist of. The minister's words are quoted by Interfax.

“It cannot be that Russia dictates to NATO how it [the alliance] should be formed,” the minister said at a meeting with her Lithuanian counterpart Arvydas Anushauskas.

According to Lambrecht, NATO will discuss Russia's proposals on security guarantees, but Moscow cannot impose its views.

The minister believes that the situation between Ukraine and the Russian Federation should be resolved through diplomacy, but at the same time "reliable deterrent measures" should be prepared against Russia.

This week, the Russian Foreign Ministry handed over to the American side drafts of an agreement between Russia and the United States on security guarantees and an agreement on measures to ensure the security of Russia and the NATO member states. In the document, the parties undertake to eliminate all existing infrastructure for deploying nuclear weapons outside their territory, to exercise restraint in military planning and during exercises to reduce the risks of possible dangerous situations, and also not to take actions that affect the security of each other.

To this, the Lithuanian Defense Ministry said that Russia's demands “cannot be accepted” - they are supposedly aimed at splitting NATO.
