Stoltenberg says NATO supports Montenegro’s membership

Upon his arrival in Podgorica on Wednesday for a two-day visit, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance strongly supported reforms Montenegro was carrying out on its journey towards NATO membership and encouraged that aspirant to keep a positive trend through the remainder of the year.

Stoltenberg was paying his first official visit to a southeastern European country that is not a NATO member, and on the first day of his stay in Podgorica he met with Montenegrin Foreign Affairs Minister Igor Luksic and Defence Minister Milica Pejanovic Djurisic.

Foreign Minister Luksic said that his country was ready to accept the invitation for NATO membership which, he added, would be a great encouragement to the development of Montenegrin society and to the implementation of reforms in integration processes.

Defence Minister Pejanovic Djurisic informed Stoltenberg of results made during the streamlining of the country’s defence system.

On Thursday, the alliance’s secretary general will be received by Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic, Parliament Speaker Ranko Krivokapic and Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic.
