Rosatom will close the entire energy demand of Hungary with nuclear generation: it will build two reactors

Hungary (bbabo.net), - The Hungarian regulator allowed Rosatom to build two power units at the Paks NPP. The nuclear power industry of the country will be able to fully cover the current demand for electricity in the country.

The Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority issued Rosatom a permit for the construction of the fifth and sixth power units of the Paks NPP.

“The State Atomic Energy Administration … is giving permission for the construction of the 5th and 6th units of the nuclear power plant, which will be built at the Paks base,” the regulator says in its documents. The term of the permit is 10 years.

Now the Paks NPP with a capacity of 2 GW covers 48% of Hungary's electricity needs. The construction of two power units with VVER-1200 reactors will allow the country to fully provide itself with electricity from nuclear energy. In this way, Budapest will also be able to fulfill the requirements of the EU Green Deal for the transition to clean energy without CO2 emissions.

The total cost of the work will be 12.5 billion euros, of which 10 billion euros is a state loan that Russia allocates to Hungary. Minister Janos Suli said that international equipment suppliers assured Budapest in April that they would continue with the project.

Hungary is the only EU country that continues active cooperation with Russia in the nuclear industry.
