Lavrov: Threat to peacekeepers in Transnistria equals attack on Russia

Caucasus (bbabo.net), - The Russian Federation will regard as an attack on itself any actions that pose a threat to the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Transnistria. This was stated today, September 1, by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a meeting with students and faculty of MGIMO.

“Everyone should understand that any actions that will endanger the security of our servicemen in Pridnestrovie will be considered, in accordance with international law, as an attack on Russia,” the head of the Foreign Ministry emphasized.

Lavrov added that a similar precedent happened in South Ossetia, when Russian peacekeepers were attacked on the orders of the then Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, and everyone knows how it all ended for the aggressor.

Recall that Chisinau has long been demanding the withdrawal of the Russian military from the region at various negotiation platforms, believing that their presence there is illegal and has an occupational character, hindering the solution of the Transnistrian problem. The authorities of the Republic of Moldova propose to replace the peacekeepers with a civilian mission.

They say in Tiraspol that if this happens, then Moldova will again try to establish control over Transnistria by force. Therefore, the presence of the Russian peacekeeping contingent is a guarantor of peace and stability, especially since their mandate is determined by the final political settlement of the conflict on the Dniester.

“All attempts by Chisinau to doubt the role of peacekeepers, as well as to push through a change in the format of the peacekeeping operation withdrawal of Russian troops, will lead to destabilization and the inevitable resumption of bloodshed,” Vladimir Dzhabarov, chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, confirmed.

As bbabo.net reported, against the backdrop of the militarization of Moldova, which is actively pursued by its Western partners, the Transnistrian authorities have asked to strengthen the Russian peacekeeping contingent.

During the Knowledge marathon held the day before, Sergei Lavrov assured that Russia would do everything to protect the interests of the Russian-speaking population in Pridnestrovie and Moldova. He stressed that Moscow "is closely monitoring the situation and will do everything so that the interests of the Russian-speaking population do not suffer."
