State Duma introduces life sentence for repeat pedophiles

Russia (bbabo.net) - The first reading in the State Duma passed a bill on life imprisonment for previously convicted pedophiles for violent acts against minors, as well as for the first time violence against two or more children and adolescents.

The authors of the initiative were First Vice Speaker of the Federation Council Andrei Turchak, Head of the State Duma Committee on State Construction and Legislation Pavel Krasheninnikov and Head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications Alexander Khinshtein.

"A life sentence is a fair measure to isolate geeks," State Duma Chairman Vyacheslav Volodin did not hide his emotions, commenting on this topic in his Telegram channel. "You cannot call them people, although they are in human form."

He expressed the hope that this decision will protect children, families, society as a whole from those who cause irreparable harm.

In connection with the resonant crimes against children, discussions about toughening punishment for pedophiles are not abating, Pavel Krasheninnikov recalled. According to the author of the project, there are even proposals in society to return the death penalty for such crimes. "In my opinion, as in the opinion of many experts, life imprisonment is a more severe punishment than the death penalty," the deputy said.

According to current legislation, life imprisonment is only threatened in the event of violence committed by a previously convicted person for a similar act and against a minor under 14 years of age. The authors from "United Russia" propose to raise this age to 18 years.

The bill extends the maximum penalty of life imprisonment to pedophiles for repeated sexual assault against minors under 18 years of age.

In addition, a life sentence will also be provided for pedophiles who were not previously involved under these articles for similar crimes if they were committed against two or more minors.

Violence against minors, associated with the commission of another grave or especially grave crime, also falls under this bill.

The document did not raise any objections from the Supreme Court and was supported by the government.
