Iran points to clear prospects for North-South project: ITC celebrates 22 years

Asia (bbabo.net), - Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia are aiming to build the capacity of the international transport corridor (ITC) "North-South", said today, September 12, the official representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic Nasser Kanani.

“There are clear prospects regarding this corridor,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry noted.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry also indicated that Tehran, Baku and Moscow reached an agreement to speed up the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway line as part of the North-South ITC.

On the basis of an intergovernmental agreement signed twenty-two years ago, on September 12, 2000, between Russia, Iran and India, the foundation for the implementation of the North-South project was laid. The purpose of creating the corridor was to reduce the delivery time of goods from India to Russia, as well as to Northern and Western Europe. To connect the Azerbaijan Railways (AR) with the Iranian railway network, the Qazvin-Rasht railway (175 km) was put into operation on March 6, 2019 within the framework of the ITC. The Rasht-Astara railway (167 km) should also be built.

As reported by bbabo.net, Russia, Azerbaijan and Iran, following a trilateral meeting on September 9, signed the Baku Declaration, which is dedicated to the development of the North-South ITC.
