Hamas tries to restore relations with Syria

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - Hamas condemned the Israeli missile attacks on Damascus International Airport on Friday night. It is reported by The Jerusalem Post on September 18.

Hamas said the movement supports Syria in the face of "repeated Israeli aggression on Syrian soil." According to the Syrian Arab news agency SANA, five Syrian soldiers were killed in the strikes. "The strikes on Syria are a continuation of Israeli aggression throughout the region," said Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem.

Hamas' latest condemnation of Israeli strikes on Syria is seen as part of the Islamist movement's efforts to re-establish its ties with the Syrian regime. Relations between Hamas and the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad deteriorated shortly after the start of the Syrian civil war.

Hamas leaders, some of whom were based in Syria, refused to side with the Assad regime against opposition groups, most of which were affiliated with Islamist organizations. In 2012, Hamas offices in Syria were closed and the group's leaders moved to Qatar.
