US sparks protests over death of Kurdish girl in Iran

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - Activists and human rights groups have reacted furiously to the death of a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish girl in Tehran after she was detained for "bad hijab". This was reported by the news portal Middle East Eye on September 18.

Mahsa Amini was in Tehran on Tuesday when a special department of the "vice police" arrested her for improperly wearing the hijab, which is mandatory for women in Iran. Tehran police said on Thursday that while in custody, Amini "suddenly developed a heart attack" and was "immediately taken to the hospital." On Friday, it was announced that she had died without regaining consciousness.

While the police said there was no "physical contact" between Amini and the officers, human rights activists said she was tortured while in custody. Prominent jurist Said Dehghan said that Amini suffered skull fractures and called her death a "murder".

US President Joe Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan wrote on Friday that Amini's death was "unforgivable" and said reports that she was "beaten in custody" needed to be investigated. Footage shared on social media shows Iranians protesting in the streets over her death.
