Nebenzya: Russia will not give up its veto in the UN Security Council while protecting its fundamental interests

- Russia does not intend to give up the right of veto in the UN Security Council when it comes to protecting the fundamental interests of her allies. This was stated today, September 19, by the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Vasily Nebenzya.

“As for the use of the veto, there are many questions here. The American envoy to the UN says that the US will refrain from using it, except in emergency situations ("rare, extraordinary situations"). There is nothing fundamentally new in this. Neither we nor other permanent members of the Council are interested in using a veto in cases other than emergency, and each such decision is of an emergency nature," the Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation noted.

Nebenzia stressed that the right of veto is a great responsibility, but at the same time it is a tool and a guarantee to prevent the adoption of unbalanced decisions.

“When it comes to protecting the fundamental interests of our country and our allies, we are not going to refuse the veto. The United States has always acted in the same way,” the diplomat said.

“The only difference now is that the dominance of Westerners in the UN Security Council allows the Americans to vote against and formally not use the right of veto, because a decision requires at least nine votes of members of the Security Council in the absence of negative votes of permanent members. If this number is not reached, the veto is not fixed, ”Nebenzya said in an interview with TASS on the eve of the high-level week of the UN General Assembly, which begins on September 20.

As bbabo.net reported earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova informed that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will speak at a meeting of the UN General Assembly, and also plans to hold about 20 bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event.

The UN General Assembly will be held from 20 to 26 September.
