Turkey to send first astronaut into space

On Monday, Turkey signed an agreement with the American company Axiom Space to send the first Turkish astronaut into space. This is reported by TASS with reference to the Minister of Industry and Technology of the country, Mustafa Varanka.

“We signed a historic agreement on the first manned space flight, which will be carried out on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of our country. We will cooperate with Axiom Space to prepare and service the flight of the Turkish astronaut, whose selection process is ongoing,” he wrote on his Twitter page.

In 2021, Turkey announced a plan to launch its own astronaut training program, due to start in 2023. The implementation of this project will cost Ankara about $6 billion, making it one of the largest and most ambitious projects in Turkey's recent history.
