Pentagon says North Korean ballistic missile launch is not a threat to US

Asia (bbabo.net), - North Korea's ballistic missile launch posed no immediate threat to the US and its allies. This is stated in the statement of the Indo-Pacific Command of the US Armed Forces dated September 24.

“We are aware of the ballistic missile launch and are in close consultation with our allies and partners. Although, according to our assessment, this event does not pose an immediate threat to military personnel, US territory and allies, ”the statement says.

At the same time, the statement notes that the missile launch testifies to the destabilizing motives of Pyongyang's military program to develop weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missiles. The American side calls this program "illegal".

Earlier in the day, Yonhap News Agency reported that an unidentified North Korean ballistic missile had been launched into the Sea of Japan. The day before, the South Korean military reported that it had detected activity in North Korea that suggested the country was ready to launch a submarine-launched ballistic missile.

On September 8, North Korea passed a law declaring the country a responsible nuclear state. According to the document, the DPRK gets the right to deliver a preventive nuclear strike to the enemy in the event of a threat of attack.

Earlier, in August, the Permanent Mission of the DPRK to the UN stated that North Korea has the right to possess nuclear weapons on the grounds of self-defense after withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

Pyongyang announced its withdrawal from the Treaty in 1993. The state finally withdrew from it in January 2003. In September 2017, North Korea announced the successful explosion of a hydrogen charge, and later announced the completion of the development of nuclear weapons, declaring itself a nuclear power.
