He called China a major global player and growth driver that has lifted millions of people out of poverty.
“But the lesson I learned from watching China throughout my life is that when China moves away from global rules and norms, when it becomes on a par with countries like Russia, then its position in the world is weakened . China will always have a choice as to which direction it wants to go,” the minister said in a statement.
According to him, Britain "will always stand up for sovereignty and economic security" and will not "turn a blind eye to repression wherever it occurs."
“We welcomed the condemnation of Russia’s violation of the UN Charter and the decision to impose sanctions against Russia by Singapore and Japan,” Cleverly added.
He stressed London's commitment to strengthening ties with the countries of Southeast Asia.
“We have become the first European country to enter into a comprehensive strategic partnership with India. And we intend to be the first European country to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which will give the region access to first-class British financial services. We are also working closely with the countries of the Indo-Pacific region to achieve prosperity and growth through new opportunities in the field of trade,” the head of the British Foreign Office concluded.
