Israel receives US proposal to demarcate maritime border with Lebanon

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid confirmed that Tel Aviv has received a US proposal to demarcate the maritime border with Lebanon. This was reported by the news portal Middle East Monitor on October 2. Lapid said his government was reviewing the final details of the proposed deal and that it was "too early to celebrate reaching an agreement."

The Israeli prime minister told his cabinet that the deal would "strengthen Israel's security and Israel's economy," adding that Israel had been seeking an agreement for more than 10 years.

On Saturday, Lebanon said it had received a letter from American mediator Amos Hochstein regarding a proposed solution to the maritime border dispute with Israel.

According to maps sent by both countries to the UN in 2011, Lebanon and Israel are embroiled in a dispute over 860 square kilometers (332 sq mi) of maritime territory. The area is rich in natural gas and oil. Since 2020, there have been five sessions of indirect negotiations supported by the United Nations and mediated by the United States on this issue, the last of which took place in May 2021.
