Kashmir Prison Superintendent Dies Under Strange Circumstances

On the night of Tuesday in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir, the head of the prison department of the region, 57-year-old Gemant Kumar Lohia, was killed under strange circumstances, reports TRT World.

At first, the suspicion of the police fell on the official's housekeeper.

However, the rebel group "People's Anti-Fascist Front" later claimed responsibility for the murder of Lohia, about which nothing was known until now. If this murder was indeed committed by the rebels, then it will be their most high-profile act in the last 30 years.

The police qualified the incident as a terrorist act, despite the fact that the circumstances of the official's death are more reminiscent of the consequences of a domestic conflict than an attempt. According to Mukesh Sikh, Director of Police Headquarters, Gemant Kumar Lohia was killed by a blow to the neck with a rose from a bottle, and later they tried to burn his body.

“This is just the start of our high-level operations and a small present for Home Minister Amit Shah,” reads a message shared by unidentified individuals on social media.

Recall that Amit Shah is on a three-day visit to Kashmir, which was deprived of its autonomy on August 5, 2019. Several insurgent groups operate in Kashmir, which are fighting for the separation of the state from India and its unification with Pakistan. In turn, the Indian police conduct raids and, often indiscriminately, detain people. Over the past 30 years, the conflict in Kashmir has claimed thousands of lives.
