Turkey urges Armenia to negotiate

Caucasus (bbabo.net), - “Face meetings are always more effective than telephone conversations. This fully applies to the upcoming talks between the President of Turkey and the Prime Minister of Armenia,” TASS quotes today, October 6, the words of a source in Turkish diplomatic circles.

According to the interlocutor of the agency, progress can be made in Prague both in terms of the settlement of relations between Ankara and Yerevan, and in the preparation of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Turkish Sabah newspaper, citing its sources, previously reported that Recep Tayyip Erdogan intends to propose to Nikol Pashinyan that the meetings of the special representatives of the two countries on the issues of normalizing their relations be held alternately in Turkey and Armenia, and not in the territories of third countries, as is currently the case.

In addition, it was indicated that the Turkish leader plans to make concrete proposals to ease tensions in the South Caucasus after the recent armed escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border and to sign a peace treaty between Yerevan and Baku as soon as possible.

Erdogan said on July 25 that his country expects concrete steps from Armenia on the way to the normalization of bilateral relations. Two weeks before, on July 11, a telephone conversation took place between the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Turkey. Yerevan and Ankara then circulated a message identical in content, which indicated that Pashinyan and Erdogan congratulated each other on the occasion of the Islamic holiday Eid al-Adha (Eid al-Adha) and the Day of the Transfiguration of the Lord (Armenian Vardavar). The leaders of neighboring countries stressed the importance of the process of normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, which will contribute to strengthening peace and stability in the region. Pashinyan and Erdogan also expressed the hope that the agreements reached during the July 1 meeting in Vienna of special representatives of the two countries will be implemented as soon as possible.

As reported by bbabo.net, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will hold two meetings this Thursday in Prague, which commentators in Yerevan tend to consider a "watershed".
