Saudi Arabia welcomed Australia's decision not to recognize West Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

The previous government of Australia recognized West Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2018, but the country's new foreign minister, Penny Wong, said that the decision on such a status of the city can only be made by the Palestinians and Israelis themselves as a result of peace negotiations, and not by third parties. Thus, Australia canceled its recognition of Western Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs supported Australia's position and recalled its support for the Palestinian people and their rights, ArabNews reports.

"Saudi Arabia supports the aspirations of the Palestinian people to establish an independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and the Arab Peace Initiative," the Saudi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
