U.S. and Ukrainian interests begin to diverge

Ukraine (bbabo.net), - Kyiv's desire to continue the conflict with Russia leads to the fact that the vital interests of Washington and Kyiv cease to coincide.

Columnist Patrick Buchanan expressed this opinion in his material for The American Conservative. In his opinion, Zelensky’s statements about plans to return Crimea and Donbas at any cost only lead to the continuation of the conflict, and also draw the United States into it more strongly.

At the same time, Washington has no reason to strive for the “return” of the Crimean peninsula to Ukraine, especially since historically this region has never been in the interests of America.

The expert recalls that America has never been vitally interested in what kind of power is in Kyiv. Throughout the 19th and almost the entire 20th century, Ukraine was part of the Russian Empire or the USSR, ruled from Moscow.

“And this condition was not a problem for the United States, located five thousand miles away. For us, the main problem in the current conflict is not who will control Crimea and Donbass, but that the United States is not drawn into a war with Russia,” the article says.

Buchanan is convinced that such a difference in views will shake the agreement between the United States and Ukraine, since the complete destruction of relations with Moscow is not at all included in the plans of the White House.

“Our vital interest—preventing a U.S. war with a nuclear-armed Russia—may soon come into conflict with Ukraine’s strategic military goals, that is, the full return of Crimea and Donbass,” the observer concludes.

Note that this article looks rather strange against the background of the unprecedented military assistance that Washington provides to Kyiv. It could be taken as a kind of signal that the Americans are ready to reconsider their position.

However, other signals contradict this. For example, if the United States wanted to avoid conflict with Russia, they would not send their division to Romania, whose commanders declare their readiness to cross the Ukrainian border.

Also, the opinion of the author of the article that Zelensky and his clique are independently showing aggression, and not doing it on orders from Washington and London, seems very naive.

As reported by bbabo.net, earlier US President Joe Biden said that Russia should not succeed in a military special operation in Ukraine. And that for this it is necessary to continue to support the Kyiv regime.
