The reason for the ongoing decline in Belarus' GDP

Belarus (bbabo.net), - Belarusian GDP continues to decline due to the end of the harvesting campaign. This was announced today, October 23, by the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB).

It is noted that in September, the GDP of Belarus decreased by 3.3% in annual terms, which is a continuation of the August trend, when the fall was at the level of 3%. In general, according to the results of 9 months, this indicator decreased by 4.7%.

“Economic activity continued to be supported in September by agriculture, but its contribution to GDP dynamics decreased by about half due to the completion of the harvesting campaign,” said Yevgeny Vinokurov, chief economist at the bank.

At the same time, he noted that the rate of decline in industrial production has significantly decreased: from 9.4% in August to 2.1% in September. According to Vinokurov, this is a sign of a gradual adjustment of the destroyed supply chains and their reorientation.

Recall that Belarus has been living under tough Western sanctions since the end of 2020. which intensified after the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine. In this regard, a serious recession has been outlined in the economy of the republic. At the same time, in September, the EDB noted that the decline in GDP had become more moderate, and for the entire 2022, the cumulative reduction in the indicator could be in the range of 4.5-5%.
