Ukraine (bbabo.net), - The German energy giant is expanding the coal mine to increase production and supply its power plants and is dismantling all wind turbines installed there. Local environmentalists are outraged and call the situation absurd.
“It is planned to produce coal at the Garzweiler open pit until 2030. To do this, eight wind turbines are being dismantled. The activists are horrified,” reports the German TV channel ZDF.
The coal mine is operated by RWE. Back in 2001, she installed eight wind turbines there. But as production expands, the company is dismantling them. In order to reduce gas consumption in the country, RWE has reopened several lignite thermal power plants this year and needs additional volumes of fossil fuels.
The wind turbines are located a few hundred meters west of the village of Lucerath, which environmental activists have been trying to save for years. The local initiative All Villages Stay has criticized the plan to dismantle the wind turbine.
“The fact that wind turbines are being demolished in the midst of a climate and energy crisis to expand a coal mine cannot be overstated in its absurdity,” the activists said.
RWE, in turn, promises that the dismantling of windmills will be compensated in another area. A representative of the company told the TV channel that they plan to install wind and solar power plants with a capacity of at least 500 MW in the Rhine coal basin.
