For the first time in half a century, a Zulu king was crowned in South Africa

In the South African city of Durban, the coronation of the 48-year-old king of the Zulus Misuzulu Sinkobile Zulu took place. The ceremony was the first since 1971.

The Zulus are the largest ethnic group in South Africa, making up one fifth of the population of South Africa. The last Zulu king, Goodwillu Zwelitini, who ruled for about 50 years, died in March 2021. He left 26 children (from six marriages), and therefore the competition for the throne was fierce.

New King Misuzul Zwelitini is 48 years old. Studied at Jacksonville University in the USA. He is married to two wives and has three sons.

In his inaugural speech, the monarch spoke out against sexual violence in South Africa (a country with one of the highest rates of rape and sexual harassment in the world).

“Violence against women and children is a disgrace to our nation. Women need to be respected and protected. We, as men, must put more effort into this,” said the Zulu king.
