Algeria has filed an official application to join the BRICS. This was reported today, on November 7, by the media with reference to the special envoy of the country's Foreign Ministry.
Algeria maintains close relations with Russia. According to media reports, President Abdelmajid Tebbun is scheduled to visit Russia in December, within the framework of which Algeria and Moscow will conclude a multi-billion dollar agreement on the supply of Russian weapons.
As bbabo.net reported, back in August, Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboun said that his country was interested in joining the BRICS. In his opinion, Algeria as a whole meets the criteria of the alliance.
Algeria is one of the largest Arab states: the Arab League summit was recently held in the country's capital, which became a demonstration of Algeria's activation on the world stage. It is noteworthy that the final communiqué of the summit contained neutral language regarding Russia's special operation in Ukraine, which emphasizes the country's balanced approach in international relations and the desire to actively participate in the formation of a new world order. The entry of Algeria into the BRICS in this context, no doubt, will lead to the strengthening of the positions of both Algeria and the organization itself.
BRICS is an interstate association of five countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The organization was founded in June 2006, within the framework of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum with the participation of the Ministers of Economy of Brazil, Russia, India, and China.
At the end of June, applications for joining the BRICS were submitted by Argentina and Iran. The BRICS International Forum claims that Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia also want to join the association. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa also spoke about the intention of the kingdom to join the organization. According to him, it was Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who expressed his desire for Saudi Arabia to join the organization.
