CNN: Ukraine asked the US for cluster munitions

Ukraine (, - Ukrainian officials and lawmakers have been urging the administration of US President Joe Biden and members of Congress in recent months to provide the Ukrainian military with cluster munition warheads, CNN reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the channel's interlocutors, Ukraine's request for cluster munitions, the use of which is prohibited in more than 100 countries, was not immediately rejected by the US administration.

Top US officials have publicly stated more than once that they plan to provide the Ukrainians with the necessary support, the channel notes.

But Western military equipment is not endless, and as warhead stocks dwindle, the Ukrainians have made it clear to the US that they could use the cluster munitions that are currently gathering dust in warehouses.

According to the channel, the Biden administration has not ruled out this option as a last resort if stocks begin to decline dangerously.

In the meantime, the sources emphasize that the proposal has yet to receive serious consideration, in large part due to congressional legislation that prohibits the transfer of cluster munitions to the US.
