USA (bbabo.net), - US State Department Special Representative for the Holocaust Ellen Germain, who traveled to Lithuania last week, urged Vilnius to call a spade and acknowledge that some national heroes participated during World War II in a Nazi-organized mass extermination of the Jews.
“The problem exists [in many countries that were occupied by the Nazis]. There is also one in Lithuania. People who are seen as national heroes are praised, immortalized with monuments, because they fought against the Soviets, but at the same time they were Nazi collaborators, participated in the crimes of Nazism, in genocide, ”Jermain told ELTA.
The Special Representative of the State Department named two people - Jonas Noreika, who under the Nazis was the head of the Siauliai district and signed the order for the resettlement of local Jews in the ghetto, as well as Juozas Krikstaponis, whose detachment participated in the murders of Jews in Belarus.
“There are such examples in Ukraine, Croatia, and other countries,” the State Department spokeswoman said.
