UN Secretary General calls for detente around Lachin corridor

Caucasus (, - UN Secretary General António Guterres expressed his concern over the situation around the Lachin corridor, calling on the parties to ensure freedom of movement along this transport artery linking Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. This is stated in a statement circulated on the evening of December 14 by the press secretary of the administrative head of the world organization Stéphane Dujarric.

"The Secretary General called on the parties to defuse tensions and ensure freedom and security of movement along the corridor, in accordance with previous agreements," the statement said.

At the same time, the UN Secretary General reiterated his support for mediation efforts in the South Caucasus aimed at advancing the peace process in the region.

The United States and France earlier called on Azerbaijan to stop blocking the Lachin corridor and restore the only transport connection between Nagorno-Karabakh and the outside world, which was interrupted after the start of the “environmental action” near the city of Shushi on December 12.
