The European Union is concerned about the rights of the Belarusian opposition

Belarus (bbabo.net), - The European Union judged "politically motivated lawsuits in Belarus." This is stated in a statement published on January 17 by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

According to him, "the political repressions of the regime of Alexander Lukashenko have reached an unprecedented level."

“Currently, there are more than 1,440 political prisoners. Arbitrary legislation deprives citizens of fundamental rights, including a new law allowing the deprivation of citizenship of Belarusians living abroad. This represents a continuing violation of the rights and freedoms of the people of Belarus and is contrary to Belarus' international obligations. The EU condemns these brutal crackdowns and politically motivated lawsuits aimed at silencing any independent voice and closing any remaining space for democratic debate,” he said.

Borrell noted that "the EU will support all courageous women who strive for a free, democratic and independent Belarus."

Recall that the authorities of Belarus continue to clean up the country from radical elements. On January 17, a trial in absentia of Svetlana Tikhanovskaya and Pavel Latushko, as well as three members of the opposition Coordinating Council, which is considered an extremist formation in Belarus, began in Minsk.
