Opposition alliance against Erdogan announces election program

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - Ahead of the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey, which will be held in mid-May, an alliance of Turkish opposition parties opposed to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced its election program on January 30 in Ankara.

The six-party opposition coalition was formed to compete with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling Justice and Development Party, which has ruled the country for two decades. The largest opposition association party is the Kemalist Republican People's Party (CHP).

The most important point of the joint program is that the coalition will restore the parliamentary system in the country instead of the current executive presidential system.

The former parliamentary system was replaced by an executive presidential system after a 2017 referendum that gave the head of state more powers.

According to the document presented today, the right to issue decrees will be left to the President of the Republic. And the head of state will be elected for a maximum of seven years instead of the current five years twice, and he will have to leave his party after being elected. Currently, Erdogan is also the chairman of the ruling party.

Another important goal of the election program is to reduce the parliamentary threshold from 7% to 3%.

In addition, it was announced that the opposition will act in the interests of Turkey's full membership in the European Union after coming to power.

The program also calls for the return of Syrian refugees. "Safely, in accordance with international law, and as soon as possible."

At the same time, an alliance of opposition parties intends to increase the independence of the central bank and reduce annual inflation to single digits within two years. Inflation is currently showing signs of slowing down but was still around 65% in December.

The six-party alliance has not yet announced its candidate for the presidency of the republic.

President Erdogan recently proposed May 14 as the date for the elections.
