Earlier, the Finnish police department said it would not allow the public burning of the Quran, as happened recently in Swedenmark, because Finnish law provides that disturbing the religious peace is a punishable offence.

A 2021 survey by the Finnish TV channel Yle showed that the majority of Finnish MPs do not want to change Finland's law on the sanctity of religion, which provides for the possibility of a six-month prison sentence for blasphemy.

However, some MPs have called for changes to the law based on free speech concerns, and the UN human rights committee has called on Finland to change the penal provision, arguing that it restricts freedom of expression.
