Ukraine (bbabo.net), - Frost hits the US northeast coast on Friday, and wholesale gas prices for New York and Boston skyrocket. Fuel was sold nine times more expensive than in Europe.
Wholesale gas supplies to New York on Friday, February 3, rose 14 times. Fuel from the Iroquois gas pipeline from Canada is being sold at $5,850 per thousand cubic meters, Bloomberg reports. According to the agency, this is a record since 2003.
Prices also skyrocketed in Boston, where gas for Friday delivery at the Algonquin City Gate hub rose to $2,000.
Thus, gas prices in New York and Boston on Friday exceed European quotes by nine and three times, respectively.
The reason for the record rise in prices was the meteorological forecast that frosts will come to the northeast coast of the United States on Friday. Temperatures in New York are expected to drop to minus 12 degrees Celsius. At the same time, Bostonians are advised to stay at home on Friday and Saturday, as the thermometer can drop to minus 30.
This week, the average gas price on the main US stock exchange Henry Hub is $85 per thousand cubic meters. On the northeast coast of the United States, they are always higher, since the gas supply system is poorly developed in the region. And Boston, for example, gets some of its gas in the form of LNG from abroad. Coastal transportation by foreign ships is prohibited in the USA, and American companies do not have their own gas carriers.
