European Union, (bbabo.net). Germany may leave the European Union if the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party comes to power in the country. This was announced by party co-chair Alice Weidel in an interview with the Financial Times today, January 22.
According to her, the UK's adoption of such a sovereign decision is an example for Germany. Weidel noted that she will insist on EU reforms that will eliminate the “democratic deficit” and limit the powers of the European Commission.
“But if reform is impossible, if we fail to restore the sovereignty of EU member states, we must allow citizens to make a decision, as the UK did,” the head of the AfD said. The party could hold a referendum on Germany's exit from the European Union, or Dexit, she said.
It is noted that such views contradict the pro-European views held by the main political forces in Germany, including those in power - the Social Democratic Party, the Free Democratic Party and the Green Party. Recently, several German politicians, including from the ruling Social Democratic Party, have spoken out in favor of the need to ban the AfD.
