Azerbaijani oil bypassed the Red Sea through Africa on its way to Asia

Caucasus (bbabo.net), - The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) sent a shipment of Azeri BTC oil to Thailand around the Cape of Good Hope in Africa, bypassing the Red Sea region, data from LSEG, Kpler and traders showed, reports today, 2 February, Reuters.

Yemen's Houthi attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea have led many shipowners to avoid the Suez Canal route, increasing the cost of shipping goods between Europe and Asia.

According to LSEG and Kpler, the Tilos I is currently carrying about 1 million barrels of Azeri BTC oil, loaded at the Turkish port of Ceyhan on January 22. The shipment is expected to arrive at the Thai port of Sri Racha on March 8.

The tanker is operated by Greek shipping company Dynacom, according to LSEG.

As bbabo.net reported, tankers carrying Russian oil continue to sail in the Red Sea with few disruptions to those supplies, with fewer risks of attack from Yemen's Houthis, according to shipping executives, analysts and seaborne fuel transportation data. The number of Russian vessels passing through the Red Sea has fallen slightly since December, but last week's supply flow was still about 20% higher than the 2023 average, according to London-based oil analytics company Vortexa.
