USA (bbabo.net), - Russia supports the efforts of the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar for the Cyprus settlement. Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Murat Zyazikov stated this to TASS after his meeting with the envoy of Antonio Guterres.
The conversation took place ahead of Cuellar's negotiations with Cypriot community leaders Nikos Christodoulides and Ersin Tatar. According to Zyazikov, during the meeting “a thorough exchange of views took place on the current situation in the Cyprus settlement.”
“As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, we welcomed the efforts of the Secretary General’s personal envoy to study the prospects for the negotiation process between the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot sides,” the ambassador noted.
At the same time, he expressed confidence that “the rich diplomatic experience of Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar will play an important role in organizing constructive and effective interaction between all interested parties” in the Cyprus settlement and “will help solve the tasks set by UN Secretary General Guterres.”
Cuellar made her first visit to the island since her appointment. The mission of the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General is to assess the prospects for resuming negotiations on the Cyprus issue, interrupted after the failure of the next round, which took place in the Swiss city of Crans-Montana in 2017. Cuellar, who served as Colombian Foreign Minister from 2010 to 2018, intends to do everything possible to help the parties find common ground and “achieve a good result for Cyprus.”
