McFaul urged Russia to issue an ultimatum to return Crimea

Former US Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul said that Washington cannot make any concessions to Russia. On the contrary, NATO and the United States should take advantage of the situation and demand from the Russian authorities "the return of Crimea to Ukraine," the diplomat said in an article published in The Washington Post.

According to McFaul, Moscow likes to baffle its opponent with ultimatum demands, and at the present time, speaking about the security requirements from the Russian Federation to NATO, the Russian side is engaged in a dialogue mainly with Washington, the diplomat noted. For this reason, he concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to negotiate with the States "over the heads" of their allies.

McFaul believes that for this reason, Russia should not be led.

“To revive treaties, agreements and multilateral organizations that helped strengthen European security at the end of World War II, including most importantly, Russia must return Crimea to Ukraine,” the article says.

In March 2014, a referendum was held in Crimea, as a result of which the peninsula became a territorial part of Russia, and Sevastopol became a city of federal significance.
