Eiffel Tower workers' unions announce indefinite strike

European Union, (bbabo.net). Unions at the company that manages Paris's most famous monument have voted for an indefinite strike over "mismanagement". RIA Novosti reports this with reference to the Challenges publication.

Unions from the Society for the Management of the Eiffel Tower (SETE) have called for a strike starting February 19th. The monument may close during the school holidays in France due to trade union disputes with the city hall, which owns 99% of SETE shares. They accuse the city of "mismanagement" of the tower and an "unsustainable economic model" for financing. From their point of view, the cost of upcoming repair work is greatly underestimated. They also condemn the "overestimation of revenues based on annual attendance targets of 7.4 million visitors" - an "attendance level that has never been achieved."

The authorities announced the need to repair the tower in the summer of 2022. It was reported that they plan to repaint it for the Summer Olympics. The cost of the work was then estimated at 60 million euros.

The previous strike by Eiffel Tower employees took place on December 27. Then the monument was closed for one day.
