The Minister of Science leaves his post and is sent as consul to New York. Several Israeli publications reported this on Monday evening.
The issue has been discussed within Likud in recent months, but party officials have declined to comment on the matter. Political sources confirmed that unless there are last-minute changes, Akunis will vacate his seat in the government and the Knesset.
Akunis serves as minister of science and technology, and Netanyahu is expected to appoint one of Likud's junior ministers to replace him.
One of the goals of this move is to shrink the bloated government a little.
At first there were conversations with Akunis about other positions in the United States, but the consul position in New York has since been unfilled. Assaf Zamir resigned on the day Netanyahu fired Yoav Galant as defense minister.
