UN official tried to explain Hamas, but failed

The scandal surrounding UN humanitarian envoy Martin Griffiths' statement yesterday that Hamas is not a terrorist organization but a political movement continues. Griffiths tried to get out of it, but it turned out even worse.

Yesterday, in an interview with Sky News, a British diplomat and senior UN official said: "For us [the UN], Hamas is not a terrorist organization. It is a political movement," adding that without a political solution it would be impossible to deal with the organization.

After the scandal arose, he published a “clarification”. “Just want to be clear: Hamas is not on the list of groups designated as terrorist organizations by the UN Security Council. This does not make their terrorist attacks on October 7th any less horrific and reprehensible, as I have said all along,” Griffiths wrote on his Platform X account.

Immediately under his post, a comment from the German Foreign Ministry appeared: “To be absolutely clear: the EU, like many others, has included Hamas on the list of terrorist organizations.”

The German Foreign Ministry was joined by other commentators asking: “Can you explain why Hamas is not included in the UN list of terrorist organizations? Because we can’t think of a single good reason.”

Eilon Levy, a spokesman for the Israeli government, also joined the discussion, writing: “I like how Germany is casting a serious shadow on the UN.”
