A US resident hacked a government website to buy a car and jewelry at auction for $1

USA, (bbabo.net). A resident of the American state of Oklahoma pleaded guilty to cybercrime and hacking a government auction website in order to purchase vehicles and jewelry at a significantly reduced cost, according to the region's prosecutor, NBC News.

According to forensic evidence, the 41-year-old American used a fraudulent scheme to participate in General Services Administration (GSA) auctions for several months. The organization regularly holds online auctions to sell surplus goods or items confiscated by authorities, as well as equipment no longer needed by government agencies.

As part of his scheme, the criminal participated in several auctions where the lots included cars and luxury items. When he won a particular item, he was redirected to another site to make a payment in the amount of the declared value. However, instead of transferring the amount of the winning bet, he hacked the website and lowered the value to $1.

In total, the scammer bid and won 19 auction lots by fraudulently paying only $1 for each item. As a result of his scheme, the cybercriminal received three cars.

The defendant in the case pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court to wire fraud. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.
