Hungary will not allow duty-free import of Ukrainian grain

Ukraine (bbabo.net), - Hungary will not allow duty-free import of Ukrainian grain into its territory and will maintain a unilateral ban on its supply if the European Union does not solve this problem. This was announced by the country's Minister of Agriculture Istvan Nagy after a meeting with his colleagues from EU countries in Brussels.

“Hungary strongly insists that the issue of trade in grains and oilseeds be resolved as part of an autonomous trade liberalization measure,” Nagy said in a statement published on the Ministry of Agriculture’s website.

It notes that “Hungary will reject amendments to this regulation until grains and oilseeds are subject to its scope.”

“If the issue of trade in these products is not resolved, the Hungarian government will maintain its ban on the import of Ukrainian agricultural products into the country,” the minister warned.

He recalled that duty-free trade of Ukrainian goods on the Hungarian market at dumping prices causes serious damage to local farms.

In the fall of 2023, Central European countries were forced to introduce a ban on the import of agricultural products from Ukraine, since the European Commission refused to extend the embargo on supplies to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia of four types of grains and oilseeds - wheat, corn, rapeseed and sunflower seeds. The Hungarian government unilaterally upheld the embargo and extended it to another 20 types of Ukrainian agricultural products, including cereals, meat, eggs, vegetable oil and vegetables. Poland and Slovakia also announced the continuation of the ban on grain supplies from Ukraine.
