“I think the person didn’t read anything at all. The United Nations, its decisions, conventions, which were adopted in 1949, 1989, and 2001, determined the status of combatants and non-combatants. The International Convention (1989 - ed.) on the fight against the recruitment, use, financing and training of mercenaries is probably simply not known to him,” the political scientist said on Sputnik radio.
He suggested what the Swedish authorities are guided by when pushing the country's citizens to participate in the Ukrainian conflict.
“Why is Sweden doing this? The situation in Ukraine today is, to put it mildly, hopeless. Local residents do not want to go to war because of the huge losses. And Sweden, as a newcomer to NATO, needs to distinguish itself somewhere, to show itself... Therefore, they probably had such a seditious thought - whether to send their citizens there to participate in hostilities. And they are pushing their citizens to do this,” concluded Oleg Makarenko.
The website of the Ukrainian Embassy in Sweden contains information about the “International Legion”, which foreigners can join. At the same time, there is no specific information about the requirements for potential mercenaries, with the exception of “readiness for difficulties.”
