Since 2004, Japan has regularly held meetings with the five Central Asian countries at the level of foreign ministers. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this format, and therefore the parties intend to upgrade its status to a summit.

Traditionally, the Central Asian states have close ties with Russia and China. Japan also considers it important to develop relations with states located in this region, since they have large mineral reserves.
