The head of Lithuania is pleased with the EU’s decision to limit the import of agricultural products from Russia and Belarus

Belarus (bbabo.net), - At the EU summit, on the initiative of Lithuania, an agreement was reached on additional tariffs on agricultural products from the Russian Federation and Belarus. About this today, April 18. said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda.

“It is very important to note that we accepted, and this was at the initiative of Lithuania, a proposal to limit the import of Russian and Belarusian agricultural products through economic measures, additional tariffs, which make them practically uncompetitive. It’s basically like a ban,” he said.

At the same time, Nauseda noted that some EU countries do not approve of such restrictions, and therefore a search for compromise is necessary. At the same time, he explained that the application of customs duties to Russian agricultural products is not part of the sanctions policy.

“Restricting the import of agricultural products is not part of the sanctions policy. This can be combated by economic means and made so that the grain is competitive,” Nausėda said.

Let us remind you that the European Commission proposes to increase customs duties on imports of Russian grain. According to commission chairwoman Ursula von der Leyen, the goal is to prevent the sale of grain exported from Ukraine to the EU. At the same time, Nauseda believes that the increase in duties is insufficient, and the restrictions should be more extensive. Earlier it became known that Lithuania again began purchasing Russian grain in February, importing 12.2 thousand for almost 2 million euros.
