Russia - Anton Gorelkin: A 7.2 billion fine will be a clear signal for IT giants

Russia (bbabo.net), - The imposition of a turnover fine of 7.2 billion rubles on Google is a logical step in the fight for the right of Russian citizens to a safe Internet environment, said the Deputy Head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy and Information Technology and connections Anton Gorelkin.

“Not a single digital corporation can make a profit on the Russian market and defiantly ignore our legislation. And this is exactly what we have been observing for several years: the requirements of the regulator are not observed, destructive content is not removed, the fines imposed earlier are not paid. I think now bigtech will receive a clear signal of the seriousness of our intentions - the amount is quite significant, but still significantly less than the fines that companies receive in other countries, "Gorelkin said.

This is the first time a Russian court has imposed a turnover fine of this size on a foreign company. Google was fined for repeated failure to remove prohibited content.

Since February 11, Roskomnadzor has been drawing up administrative protocols in relation to social networks that have not removed or untimely removed calls, including for minors to participate in unauthorized actions.

The largest Internet services - Google, Telegram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok - have been repeatedly prosecuted in Russia for not removing prohibited content. At the moment, the amount of fines that have come into force against companies is about 200 million rubles.
