Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs: “Tension in the region is heightened by the Zionist regime”

Greater Middle East (bbabo.net), - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said his country has sent numerous “messages” to the United States to assure that Tehran does not seek to “inflame tensions” in the Middle East with Israel. This was reported today, April 18, by the Greek publication Hallas Journal.

“What could increase tension in the region is the behavior of the Zionist regime,” said Abdollahian, who was in New York for a meeting of the UN Security Council.

On April 16, Israel said it had the “right to defend itself” from Iran after Tehran launched drones and missiles into Israeli territory. Abdollahian insisted that “messages were sent to the US before and after the operation,” mainly through the Swiss embassy in Tehran, which also represents US interests.

“We made clear to the Americans that the decision ... to respond to the Israeli regime” after Israel struck the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1 “was final,” he said. “In these messages, we tried to make it clear to the United States that we do not seek to spread tension in the region.”

In New York, Hossein Amir Abdollahian is due to meet UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and foreign ministers on the sidelines of a Security Council meeting that will consider Palestine's request for admission to the UN as a full state.
