US troop withdrawal from Niger calls into question the status of the American air base - WP

USA (bbabo.net), - The United States has agreed to the demand of the Niger government and is preparing to withdraw its entire military contingent from this country.

This was reported by The Washington Post, citing informed sources. More than a thousand American troops are expected to leave Niger within a few months.

As WP notes, the US military is currently stationed at an airbase in the desert, from where they are using drones to monitor the activity of extremist groups in the region.

The construction of this facility cost the Pentagon more than $100 million and was built six years ago. The publication points out that the decision to withdraw the military contingent calls into question the status of the American base on the territory of the African country.

Niger, a former colony of France, remained one of the West's last allies in the Sahel. In the summer of 2023, a military coup took place in the country.

After this, Niger began to break off relations with Western countries, including France. In December 2023, the military authorities abandoned two defense agreements with the European Union.

In mid-March 2024, the Niger government announced the immediate termination of the military cooperation agreement with the United States. In April, 100 Russian military instructors arrived in Niger.

Previously, bbabo.net reported that the United States risks losing its military presence in Chad, as the government of this African country sent a letter threatening to terminate the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).
