Germany resumes funding for UNRWA following UN report

After the report of the Catherine Colonna commission, which caused a negative reaction in Israel, Germany is resuming funding for UNRWA, which was interrupted after the organization's employees were accused of terrorism.

Israel has failed to prove that it is entirely a terrorist organization. When it became known that some employees had participated in the October 7 massacre, the agency immediately fired them.

But there is information that the IDF detained humanitarian workers; according to them, they were tortured in custody.

The Column's final report said Israel provided no evidence of crimes committed by UNRWA workers, but made recommendations to change the agency's work. Among other things, the recommendations concerned students in UNRWA schools who call for the destruction of Israel.

The German government plans to resume cooperation with the UN Agency for Palestinian Affairs in the sector, the foreign and development ministries said in a joint statement on Wednesday.

Germany called on UNRWA to quickly implement the report's recommendations, including strengthening its internal audit function and improving external oversight of project management.

“In support of these reforms, the German government will soon continue to cooperate with UNRWA in the Gaza Strip, as Australia, Canada, Sweden and Japan, among others, have already done,” the ministries said in a statement.

Germany is one of the agency's largest sponsors.
