Algeria, which has a "long tradition" of welcoming refugees, is "strategic" for the humanitarian aid in the world, said this Monday in Geneva the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Antonio Guterres.

"Algeria is a country that has a very long tradition of welcoming refugees including those from my country (Portugal) during the dictatorship period of Antonio de Oliveira Salazar, and we will never forget it, especially the Portuguese democrats," said Guterres to the press after a meeting with Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra.
