Belgium is still far from the EU renewable energy plan

The share of renewable energy in gross of final energy consumption has increased in recent years in Belgium from 2.3% in 2005 to 6.8% in 2012. But the country remains far from the goal imposed by Europe to reach at least 13% in 2020. All 28 countries of the European Union showed 14.1% in this area in 2012 according to the latest data released on Monday by Eurostat.

Europe 2020 adopted by the European Council in June 2010, aims to establish a "smart, sustainable and pervasive economy growth with high levels of employment, productivity and social cohesion." Five ambitious objectives that are to be achieved by 2020 were set in the areas of employment, research and development (R & D), climate change and energy consumption, education and the poverty reduction.
